Vortex Strategy & Recruitment is actively seeking a Principal Senior Director of Canadian Taxation for its client, a highly reputable and rapidly growing provincial accounting firm based in Montreal. The firm has over 200 employees, and the team continues to expand.
The Principal Senior Director leads a variety of tax mandates requiring multiple interactions with partners and clients. They are regarded by clients as their key reference within the firm and play an important role in understanding specific issues. They manage teams for the mandates under their responsibility and also act as a resource person for all other teams. They are accountable for the optimal use of resources in relation to the mandates under their supervision. The Principal Senior Director demonstrates a high level of autonomy in managing their mandates and acts as a signing authority for selected engagements. They are a strong representative of the firm.
Your Role and Responsibilities
Demonstrate a high level of technical expertise in identifying and understanding the nuances of applicable tax provisions and the positions of tax authorities.
Advance certain matters, with the support of the partner, by pushing analyses to a higher level.
Serve as a reference for technical expertise and excellent judgment.
Have an excellent understanding of tax authority positions and case law.
Communicate applicable concepts to stakeholders regarding specific issues.
Provide solutions that adapt theory to practice and integrate them into communications
Assist team members in improving communications with a professional and impeccable approach toward stakeholders.
Continuously communicate the progress of mandates and validate priorities with stakeholders.
Coordinate communications and lead stakeholders on complex mandates.
Participate in leading training activities on complex topics and effectively communicate knowledge.
Reconcile client expectations with engagement constraints.
Manage client expectations and engagement constraints.
Monitor work in progress, invoice clients in a timely manner, and follow up on accounts receivable (if applicable).
Ensure the profitability of mandates.
Meet firm expectations related to WIP adjustment rates, billing timelines, and accounts receivable collection.
Generate engagement opportunities across the firm’s various service lines.
Be regarded by clients as their key reference within the firm and be able to respond to both routine and specialized client needs.
Follow up on various mandates assigned to their clients.
Ensure the strengths of each team member are effectively utilized.
Know how to delegate, teach, and promote knowledge sharing.
Be able to determine what should be delegated and what is transferable.
Recognize to whom to delegate and how to maintain control and accountability over delegated tasks.
Properly plan engagements and ensure team members under their supervision are fully utilized.
Demonstrate a high level of autonomy in managing clients or files assigned to them (simple and complex).
Validate budgets with the partner.
Approve memoranda based on pre-established criteria.
Be able to translate a commercial agreement into legal and tax transactions.
Draft and review complex tax opinions using appropriate legislation and research materials.
Approve certain tax opinions based on pre-established criteria.

Requirements
Master’s degree in taxation or “In-Depth Tax Course” / CPA Canada or equivalent experience;
A CPA, CA designation or legal background is an asset;
Proficiency with Taxprep software and CCH online research tool is essential;
Excellent French writing skills and strong ability to synthesize information.
