Vortex Strategy & Recruitment is actively seeking a Senior Director of Canadian Taxation for its client, a highly reputable and rapidly growing provincial accounting firm based in Montreal. The firm has over 200 employees, and the team continues to expand.
The Senior Director leads a variety of tax mandates requiring multiple interactions with partners and clients. They act as a mentor to the team. They are also a key resource for all other teams. The Senior Director is capable of handling complex tax mandates or special engagements. They contribute to the firm’s success and “think firm-first.”
Your Role and Responsibilities
Carry out tax research and analysis and share the results obtained
Identify and understand the nuances of applicable tax provisions and the positions of tax authorities.
Summarize and synthesize findings and highlight conclusions.
Serve as a reference for technical expertise and sound judgment for team members.
Have a strong understanding of tax authority positions and case law.
Communicate applicable concepts to stakeholders regarding specific issues.
Provide solutions that adapt theory to practice and integrate them into communications.
Write tax opinions
Be able to draft complex tax opinions using appropriate legislation and research materials.
Review complex tax opinions
Communicate with tax authorities, colleagues, and clients
Assist team members in improving communications with a professional and impeccable approach toward stakeholders.
Continuously communicate the progress of mandates and validate priorities with stakeholders.
Coordinate communications and lead stakeholders on complex mandates.
Participate in training activities on complex topics.
Take charge of training activities on complex topics and effectively communicate knowledge.
Manage tax compliance mandates
Review complex individual tax returns (T1).
Be able to find solutions to technical issues.
Approve tax returns.
Determine applicable fees and validate them with the partner.
Ensure the profitability of mandates.
Ensure follow-up on work in progress and accounts receivable
Participate in tax planning, reorganization, or tax dispute mandates
Take charge of complex mandates and be autonomous on simpler ones.
Identify issues or grey areas and present solutions to the partner.
Review simpler memos and draft complex instruction memoranda.
Be able to understand the commercial deal.
Requirements
Master’s degree in taxation or “In-Depth Tax Course” / CPA Canada or equivalent experience;
A CPA, CA designation or legal background is an asset;
Proficiency with Taxprep software and CCH online research tool is essential;
Excellent French writing skills and strong ability to synthesize information.
